- The department is committed to fair and equitable recruitment and comprehensive onboarding practices in its workplaces by:
- attracting and hiring the best applicants so they can deliver the department’s organisational and strategic objectives
- using inclusive and merit-based recruitment practices to ensure fair, ethical and transparent appointments that build employee and public confidence in department appointments
- providing equal employment opportunities, free from unlawful discrimination, to all individuals regardless of race, religion, origin, gender, sexual orientation, disability, age, Indigenous status and other dimensions of diversity, to reflect our community
- treating job applicants with respect, providing them with reasonable adjustments and maintaining their privacy and confidentiality
- screening job applicants appropriately to ensure the safety, welfare and wellbeing of learners and employees
- offering a range of promotion and transfer options that provide employees with the opportunity to progress their career
- confirming Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander status for those entering Indigenous identified roles
- creating a positive onboarding and induction experience to orient and engage new employees, contractors or volunteers quickly to their school or education support office, their team and the department
- ensuring that recruitment practices comply with all relevant recruitment legislation, regulations, industrial instruments, codes of practice, standards, procedures and guidelines.

- Context
- The department uses a range of recruitment and onboarding processes to ensure it attracts the best talent, while upholding the principles of merit, diversity, ethics and child protection.
- Recruitment teams and hiring managers, including principals, must recruit employees according to this policy and the associated procedures, legislation, regulations, industrial instruments and supporting material that apply to the relevant employee classification.
- All employees, contractors or volunteers must follow the guidance set out in this policy and its associated procedures during their onboarding.
- This policy is consistent with, and should be read in conjunction with, all department policies and procedures related to recruitment and onboarding.
